A battlefield that starts out crisply beautiful, a golden autumn scene, and gradually transforms into a muddy hell. As I've mentioned elsewhere, I opted to use the Richard Pevear/Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace for numerous reasons. Yes, I've been looking for Hadji Murad too, the version translated by Pevear and Volokhonsky. I read the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation, and I was absolutely blown away. I think it was published in a book of several short Tolstoy novels.
